The Life of St. John of God

John was born in Portugal and worked as a shepherd, a soldier and a bookseller in Spain. After hearing St. John of Ávila preach in Granada, he gave everything away and devoted his life to God.

He opened a house for the sick and poor in Granada and cared for them himself, begging for food in the streets. His companions became the Brothers Hospitallers, who still serve the sick around the world.
