The Life of St. Francis de Sales
Francis was the eldest son of a noble family in Savoy, trained in law to please his father, and chose instead to become a priest. As a young missionary in the Chablais region he preached with patience and kindness, and he went on to serve as Bishop of Geneva.
His Introduction to the Devout Life was written for ordinary people in families, shops and courts, teaching that every vocation can become a path to holiness. With St. Jane Frances de Chantal he founded the Visitation Sisters, and St. John Bosco named his Salesians after him.
“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself.”

Get to Know St. Francis de Sales
He Slipped Pamphlets Under Doors
When people would not come to hear him preach, Francis wrote short leaflets explaining the faith and slipped them under doors. Pius XI named him patron of writers and journalists in 1923.
He Learned Signs to Teach a Deaf Man
Francis befriended a deaf man named Martin and worked out a way of signs to teach him the faith and prepare him for the sacraments. He is honored as a patron of the deaf.
Holiness for Everyone
His Introduction to the Devout Life told soldiers, merchants, parents and servants that devotion fits every walk of life, and it is still one of the most read spiritual books in the world.
Honey Over Vinegar
Francis is remembered for saying that you catch more flies with a spoonful of honey than with a barrel of vinegar. Gentleness was his whole approach to people.
Patience With Yourself
He counseled friends to have patience with all things, but chiefly with themselves, and to begin again each day without discouragement.
Friendship That Became an Order
His spiritual friendship with St. Jane Frances de Chantal, carried on in hundreds of warm letters, led to the founding of the Visitation Sisters in 1610.
The Saint Behind the Salesians
St. John Bosco so admired his kindness that he named his congregation the Salesians after him. Schools and parishes around the world carry his name.
