The Life of St. Barbara

Barbara was a young woman whose father kept her in a tower. She came to believe in Christ and had a third window added to the tower in honor of the Holy Trinity, and she stayed faithful to the end.

She became the patron of miners, artillery crews, firefighters and anyone facing sudden danger, especially lightning. A favorite tradition is Barbara branches: cherry twigs cut on her feast and kept in water, which bloom by Christmas.
