He felt a strong call to become a Jesuit and, unable to get his family's permission, set out on foot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe walked about 450 miles to St. Peter Canisius, who sent him on to Rome, where he entered the Jesuit novitiate.
