The Life of St. Sebastian

Sebastian was an officer in the Roman imperial guard who used his position to encourage Christians in prison. When his faith was discovered, he was shot with arrows and left for dead, but St. Irene found him alive and nursed him back to strength.

Instead of hiding, he went to the emperor himself to speak for the Christians, and gave his life for Christ. His perseverance made him a hero for athletes and soldiers. The full name of Rio de Janeiro is Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, after him.
