The Life of St. Polycarp
Polycarp knew the Apostle John and served as Bishop of Smyrna for decades. St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote him a letter, and St. Irenaeus remembered listening to him as a boy.
When he was arrested in old age and told to curse Christ, he refused with words that still move believers today. The account of his martyrdom, written by his own church, is one of the oldest of its kind.

Get to Know St. Polycarp
Eighty-Six Years
Told to curse Christ, Polycarp answered, "Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?"
He Fed His Captors
When soldiers came to arrest him, Polycarp ordered food and drink for them and asked only for an hour to pray.
Like Bread Baking
The early account of his death says the fire formed an arch around him and the air was filled with a fragrance like bread baking.
A Link to the Apostles
He was a disciple of St. John and teacher of St. Irenaeus, connecting the apostles with later generations.
