The Life of St. Peter Claver
Peter joined the Jesuits in Spain, and the elderly doorkeeper St. Alphonsus Rodriguez encouraged him to go to the Americas. He arrived in Cartagena, a major port of the slave trade, in 1610.
For nearly forty years he met every slave ship that arrived, bringing food, water, medicine and kindness, and he baptized and taught countless people. He signed his vows as the slave of the slaves forever.
