The Life of St. Paul

Saul of Tarsus was a brilliant, fiery young scholar who opposed the first Christians until a blinding light stopped him on the road to Damascus and Jesus asked, "Why are you persecuting me?" Three days later he was baptized, and the fire that had driven him against Christ now carried the Gospel across the Roman world.

His adventures read like a novel: friends lowered him over the walls of Damascus in a basket, he survived a shipwreck on Malta and calmly shook a viper off his hand into the fire, and he supported himself as a tentmaker. His letters gave us lines people still read at weddings: "Love is patient, love is kind."
