The Life of St. Lawrence
Lawrence was a young deacon of Rome who managed the Church's money and cared for its poor. When the prefect demanded the treasures of the Church, Lawrence asked for a few days, then came back with a crowd of the poor, the sick and the blind and said, "These are the treasures of the Church."
He was martyred on a gridiron, and the Church has always remembered his cheerful courage. Tradition says he joked to his executioners, "Turn me over, I'm done on this side." That humor made him the patron of cooks, chefs and comedians. Around his feast the Perseid meteor shower lights up the sky, called the Tears of St. Lawrence.
