The Life of St. John the Baptist
John leaped for joy in his mother Elizabeth's womb when Mary came to visit, and he never lost that joy. He grew up to live in the desert, wearing camel's hair and eating locusts and wild honey, and crowds came to hear him call them to turn back to God and be baptized in the Jordan.
When Jesus came to the river, John pointed and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God," words we still hear at every Mass. He baptized Jesus and then stepped aside with total humility: "He must increase, but I must decrease." He gave his life for speaking the truth.
