The Life of St. John Henry Newman
Newman was a brilliant Oxford scholar and preacher who searched the writings of the early Church with all his heart. That search led him into the Catholic Church in 1845, and he founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham, where he served as a parish priest.
His books, sermons, poetry and hymns shaped the modern Church, and he was named a cardinal in 1879. In 2025 he was declared a Doctor of the Church and co-patron of the Church's educational mission with St. Thomas Aquinas.
“God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.”
