The Life of St. Joan of Arc
Joan was a farm girl from Domremy in France who began hearing the voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret at about thirteen. At seventeen she convinced the future king to let her ride with his army, and she led French troops to lift the siege of Orleans in 1429, then stood beside Charles VII at his coronation in Reims.
She went into battle carrying a white banner with the names of Jesus and Mary, and said she loved her banner forty times more than her sword. Her quick, faith-filled answers amazed educated men. Asked whether she was in God's grace, she replied, "If I am not, may God put me there; and if I am, may God so keep me."
