The Life of St. Anthony of Padua

Anthony was born in Lisbon and joined the Franciscans after seeing the relics of martyred friars. Hoping for a quiet life, he was asked to say a few words at an ordination when no one else was ready, and he preached so beautifully that he spent the rest of his short life as one of the most famous preachers in Europe.

He is the friend everyone calls when the keys go missing. The tradition started when a novice ran off with Anthony's prayer book, and after Anthony prayed, the young man brought it back. Today millions ask his help finding lost things, and the gifts given in thanks, called St. Anthony's Bread, still feed the poor.

“Si quaeris miracula (If then you seek miracles)”
Opening of the responsory by Friar Julian of Speyer, 13th century

Families Pray "Tony, Tony, Look Around"

Many families use a playful rhyme: "Tony, Tony, look around, something's lost and must be found." The more formal prayer begins "St. Anthony, perfect imitator of Jesus."

St. Anthony's Bread Feeds the Poor

St. Anthony's Bread is the tradition of giving bread or donations to the poor in thanks for his help. Many churches keep a St. Anthony box for exactly this.

He Preached to the Fish

At Rimini, when the townspeople would not listen, he preached at the shore, and as the story goes, the fish lifted their heads out of the water to hear him.

He Was Seen Holding the Child Jesus

A friend reported seeing Anthony holding the Infant Jesus while he prayed, a sign of his deep love for Christ.

Celebrated Every June 13

He was declared a saint less than a year after his death, one of the fastest canonizations ever.

Helper of Travelers and the Single

Besides lost items, Anthony watches over the poor, travelers and those hoping to find a spouse.
