The Life of St. Ambrose of Milan

Ambrose was a Roman governor in Milan, still preparing for baptism, when the people gathered to choose a new bishop. A voice in the crowd cried out "Ambrose for bishop," and the whole city agreed. Within a week he was baptized, ordained and consecrated.

He became a wise pastor, a great preacher and a writer of hymns still sung today. His preaching helped lead St. Augustine to Christ, and Ambrose baptized him at Easter in 387.
