The Life of Bl. Fulton Sheen

Peter John Sheen grew up on a farm in Illinois and took his mother's maiden name, Fulton. After brilliant studies he became a priest and a professor, and his radio program The Catholic Hour made his warm voice known across the country.

In the 1950s his television series Life Is Worth Living drew tens of millions of viewers each week. He wrote dozens of books, served as a bishop, and spent an hour in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every day of his priesthood.

“The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white Host.”

Get to Know Bl. Fulton Sheen

He Thanked His Four Writers

When he won an Emmy in 1952, Sheen thanked his four writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

A Daily Holy Hour for Sixty Years

On the day he was ordained he promised to spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament every day, and he kept that promise for his whole life.

Just a Chalkboard and a Smile

His television show was simple: a bishop, a chalkboard and a statue of Our Lady. He joked that an angel erased the board when he walked off camera.

Prime Time for the Faith

Life Is Worth Living went head to head with the biggest stars on television and still drew millions of viewers every week.

Radio Before Television

For more than twenty years he preached on The Catholic Hour radio program, receiving thousands of letters every week.

A Gift for Explaining the Faith

Sheen could make deep truths clear with humor and stories, and his books and recordings still help people come to know Christ.

Love for the Eucharist

He often spoke of the Eucharist as the center of his life and urged everyone to make time to visit Jesus in the tabernacle.
